The Rock Island County Sheriff’s Merit Commission is responsible for preparing and maintaining an alphabetical list of all qualified candidates.  The list is normally established after candidates successfully complete a physical agility test and a written exam.  A background investigation, oral interview, and psychological examination are also included in the hiring process.  Unless the eligibility list is exhausted, it will remain in effect for a period of two (2) years. 

Further, applicants who have served with another sheriff’s office, police department or other law enforcement agency may, at the sole discretion of the Merit Commission, be certified to the Sheriff for appointment as deputy sheriff. Lateral Transfer applications are accepted on a continual basis. Transfer applicants must successfully complete a background investigation and pass an oral interview conducted by the Merit Commission.

Deputy Sheriff’s must be 21 years of age and successfully complete a 14-week (560 hours) at a certified Illinois Police Academy, followed by a Field Training Officer program for another fourteen weeks.  A candidate who is twenty (20) years of age and possesses an Associate of Arts (AA) Degree in Law Enforcement, or related law enforcement field, and will attain his/her 21st birthday during the probationary period may qualify as eligible. 

The Rock Island County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting deputy sheriff testing on January 28th, 2022 starting at 8:00 a.m. at the Augustana College’s PepsiCo Center (1025 30th Street Rock Island, Illinois 61201). A written test will follow later that day at 1:00 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Office. Correctional Officer candidates must successfully complete the interview process, background investigation and Health physical requirements.

Applicants who are certified as Correctional Officers with the State of Illinois must successfully pass the interview process, background investigation and Health physical fitness requirements to be considered for employment. A resume and proof of certification must accompany the application.

Correctional Officers must be 18 years of age and complete a five-week off-site training program through the Police Training Institute, which is followed by a three month in-house training program.
